1. Am I eligible to apply for a 2016/17 Taste of Research Summer Scholarship?

You are eligible if you are:

  • A high achieving third-year undergraduate* student enrolled in a full-time program (second-year students may be considered in special circumstances)
  • Enrolled in a relevant program at UNSW, another Australian University or New Zealand University
  • Submit an application form by 21 August 2016
  • A local or an international student

* students undertaking a combined undergraduate degree (eg. BE/BE, BE/BCom) may apply if entering their final year of study in 2016. This exemption does not apply to students enrolled in a BE/MBiom or BE/ME.

2. What are the benefits of undertaking a 2016/17 Taste of Research Summer Scholarship?

  • $500 per week stipend (tax exempt)
  • UNSW Bachelor or Engineering students may use their Taste of Research Summer Scholarship project as a contribution towards their Industrial Training requirements (up to 6 weeks)
  • Join an active Research Team and participate in current and exciting research.

3. When are the scholarships available?

The scholarships are available in a variety of research areas for a period of 12 weeks, from 21 November 2016 to 24 February 2017. There is a 2-week break from 19 December 2016 to 2 January 2017 (inclusive).

4. Are there any specific requirements of a Taste of Research Scholar that I should be aware of?

Yes. Taste of Research Scholars are required to:

  • Commence the Project on Monday 21 November 2016
  • Attend a half-day induction on Wednesday 23 November 2016
  • Attend 2 two-hour workshops on “Communicating Your Taste of Research Project: The Visual and the Verbal” (scheduled for Wednesday 25 January 2017 and Wednesday 1 February 2017 – these dates are subject to change)
  • Attend School poster presentation (scheduled for Tuesday 21 February 2017)
  • Attend Faculty poster showcase (scheduled for Thursday 23 February 2017)
  • Describe the type of research activities undertaken during their Taste of Research Summer Scholarship within written reports.

5. Do I need to indicate my actual Project choice when applying?

Yes. You are able to select four Projects from those available, in order of preference. Ensure that you read the Project information carefully prior to completing your application. It is recommended that you print a copy of the Projects selected for future reference.

6. Can I apply to undertake a Project in a School other than the one I am studying in?

Yes. You are able to select four Projects from those available.

7. What is the deadline for applying for the 2016/17 Taste of Research Summer Scholarship using the online application service?

Applications close 5:00pm (AEST) 21 August 2016.

8. Do I need to submit any documentation with my application?

Yes. You are required to submit two PDF files when completing your online application – your academic transcript (showing subjects and results) and your resume (curriculum vitae).

UNSW applicants – your academic transcript from myUNSW is sufficient for this purpose, unless you have undertaken one or more undergraduate years at an institution other than UNSW (e.g. two years at a university in China or Singapore). These students should submit a copy of that academic transcript (showing subjects and grades) as well.

Non-UNSW applicants are required to mail a certified copy of their academic transcript to:

9. Can I authorise another person to complete the online application form?

No. You must personally complete the application, and you are personally responsible for the security of your User Name and Password. Submission of your application requires formal acceptance of these conditions.

10. Which browsers are supported by the online application service?

The 2016/17 Taste of Research Summer Scholarship application website is best viewed using:

  • Microsoft IE7 or higher for Windows
  • Safari 5 or higher for Macintosh
  • Firefox 12 or higher for Macintosh

11. What if I don't have internet access?

12. How many applications can I submit?

Only one application will be allowed for the 2016/17 Scholarship Program. If more than one application is submitted, only the first will be processed and subsequent applications will be disregarded. If you need to change your application after you have submitted, please contact the Applications Administrator (Tel: +61 2 9385 6429; E: a.yeung@unsw.edu.au)

13. Should I keep a copy of my completed/submitted application?

Yes. Print/Make a copy of your submitted application and keep it for your records.

14. Can I change my application once submitted to UNSW?

You may request changes to the four available Project preferences, up to 5:00pm 21 August 2016, by contacting the Applications Administrator (Tel: +61 2 9385 6429; E: a.yeung@unsw.edu.au)

15. Will I receive an acknowledgment of application receipt?

Yes. When you 'Submit Application' you will receive a formal Acknowledgment of Receipt by email. Your application is not complete until you receive this notification and incomplete applications cannot be processed by the Faculty of Engineering.

16. Is Help available?

We hope to start sending letters of scholarship offer by email from 22 September 2016. Notification of an unsuccessful application will be emailed from 3 October 2016.
